🌳 Sap Dripping from a Tree!
Thousands of years ago
🌿 What is Chicle?
Deep in the jungles of Central America grows a tree called the Sapodilla. If you scratch its bark, a white, sticky liquid oozes out. That liquid is called Chicle — and it's the original chewing gum!
Thousands of years ago, the Maya and Aztec civilizations hardened this sap and chewed it. It helped them feel less hungry, quench thirst, and stay alert during long days of farming and hunting.
So the next time you chew a piece of gum, remember — you're doing something people did over 3,000 years ago!

🇺🇸 The Accidental Inventor!
1869, USA
🔬 A Happy Accident!
In the 1860s, an American inventor named Thomas Adams got hold of a big batch of chicle. His plan? Use it to make synthetic rubber — a cheap substitute for tires and boots.
He tried everything. Nothing worked. Frustrated, he popped a piece of chicle into his mouth… and thought, "Wait, this actually tastes amazing?!"
In 1871, he set up the world's first gum vending machine on a New York City subway platform. It sold out immediately. The gum industry was born!
💬
Thomas: "Rubber? Failed. But wait — this stuff is delicious! 💡 Time to sell gum!"

🏭 Gum Goes Big — Hello, Factory!
1880s
🍬 Gum Goes Global!
Watching Thomas Adams succeed, a savvy businessman named William Wrigley Jr. jumped into the gum game. He added flavors — fruity, minty, sweet — and the public went crazy for it.
You might already know his brands: Juicy Fruit and Spearmint gum are still sold worldwide today, both created by Wrigley in the 1890s!
By the early 1900s, gum had gone from a jungle survival food to a global industry — packaged, flavored, and sold in every corner store.

Wrigley: "Mint flavor, fruit flavor, bubblegum too! The more flavors, the better! 🏭"

🔬 Today's Gum Is… Plastic?!
Post-WWII ~ Today
😱 Shocking Truth!
After World War II, chicle trees couldn't keep up with global demand. So gum companies replaced natural chicle with polyvinyl acetate (PVA), a synthetic polymer.
In plain English? The gum base in modern gum is basically a form of plastic. That's why it never dissolves in your mouth — your digestive system simply can't break it down!
This is why you should always spit gum out rather than swallow it. It'll pass through eventually, but it's not meant to be eaten!
💬
Your stomach: "Nope, I cannot digest this. Please spit it out! 🙅" Gum base: "I'm plastic's cousin, sorry 😅"

🌱 Natural Gum Makes a Comeback!
Recent trend
🌿 Going Green!
As environmental awareness grows, natural chicle gum is making a comeback! Synthetic gum stuck to sidewalks costs cities millions in cleaning fees — and it never biodegrades.
Companies in Europe and North America are developing biodegradable gum made from chicle — going full circle back to what the Maya chewed thousands of years ago!
Fun fact: Singapore actually banned chewing gum from 1992 to 2004 because gum was jamming subway doors! 😮
💬
Earth: "Thank you for switching back to natural gum! 🌍💚"
